Reviewing Trish Roberts, Owner of Custom Concept Photography & Framing
Meeting with Trish Roberts to interview and review her wedding photography was both delightful and inspiring. This owner of Custom Concept Photography & Framing comes highly recommended, to say the least, with local experts being among the first to admit this girl's got talent. From the beginning, we knew that Trish was an incredible wedding photographer. But to take that further, she showed herself to be artistic, personable, and an obvious romantic at heart.
Knowing just what angles to shoot from, how to catch the moments that matter to you - the intimate, classic, romantic and joyous ones - in a collection of photos, Trish sat down with the staff at The Ring to fill us in on as much as she possibly could about herself and Custom Concept Photography & Framing. Let us explain...
Personally speaking... Trish Roberts originally studied Graphic Design at Conestoga College where, as part of the curriculum, she was required to complete some photography assignments. Realizing that she had a natural knack for photography, she switched tracks and studied Applied Photography at Sheridan College. "I found the commercial portion of the course lacked the emotional aspect that something like a wedding has... the assignments helped me realize that I needed people, emotion, movement... I found what inspires me." She received her diploma in 1998,
and immediately opened her business Custom Concept Photography & Framing, through which she has been capturing the emotions and essence of local weddings for over ten years. She now works full-time with her husband, Trevor, the Director of the studio.
Trish has ten PPOC (Professional Photographers of Canada) Accreditations. Accreditation means that Trish has submitted samples of her photography to a PPOC Board of Review and is considered a level above the general PPOC membership. The award proves that she is capable of delivering above-average quality in photographs in a specific category. The Board of Review judges the following when an image is submitted: impact, style, presentation, creativity, composition, centre of interest, colour balance, lighting, subject matter, print quality, technique and story telling. Trish attributes her accreditations and consistent success to the fact that she's always upgrading and looking for tips, techniques, lighting, angles and ideas to make your images as different and unique as she can. She attends PPOC conventions and seminars every opportunity she has, and each time returns to the studio bursting at the seams with ideas for shooting, posing, packages, style and albums. "There is always more to learn - and I love it!"
Trish was also nominated for the Professional Photographers of Ontario 2007 and 2008 Portrait Photographer of the Year and received National Accreditations for the categories of Wedding Story, Environmental Wedding, Couples Portrait and Maternity. In January 2008, Trish received her 8th, 9th & 10th National Accreditations in 'Photojournalistic Wedding', 'Family Portraits' and 'Canine/Dog Portrait'. Most recently, she gained her CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) designation.
Trish shoots using only digital, top quality equipment. She admits that there’s just so much more that can be done with the digital format now. And it doesn’t compromise the quality of the images and prints. "If anything, today's digital photography enhances them."
Trish loves photography, specifically wedding photography, stating, "I’m the luckiest person around. It’s not work, it's fun." She typically shoots twenty-five to thirty weddings per year and is happy to take bookings for weekdays or weekends.
Trish Roberts offers the professional photography that you deserve to have on your wedding day. Equally important, Trish has a natural and technical skill for knowing just how to capture your personality as much as she can capture your wedding day. Those moment-by-moment emotions that pass by in front of the camera inspire her to set her shots around you. When the wedding day has come and gone, a couple can be walking away with wedding albums that portray the things that matter the most in their hearts - intimate shared moments between them, class and beauty of the ceremony and reception, personalities that played out in themselves and their friends and families on the special day.
Trish describes her style as photojournalistic throughout the day and contemporary when it comes to poses and formals. But even with poses, she takes on a candid approach. Trish gives general direction for the pose and then waits to see what the couple does with it - and then she shoots. This allows her clients' true personalities to show in the image.
Nicolette and Ben who were married on May 23, 2008 raved to The Ring about their experience with Trish and Trevor, "Both of us were very intrigued by how well Trish captured the spirit of our day. The series of pictures tells a story like nothing else. The photography, which truly is a work of art, completely reflects us and our families, and our marriage celebration! Both Trish and Trevor are very relaxed people and easy to work with. Trish was extremely accommodating to our needs. And as far as the day of, Trish was snapping shots all along, but we never really felt as though we were posing all day. She and her assistant trailed us, capturing the natural flow of the day. Our favourite photos are the candid shots Trish took of us, our wedding party, and friends and family. Somehow each person in the picture is completely represented more so in a candid than in a pose. Trish also has an eye for detail, and her results are stunning!"
Planning your photography: From slideshows to second shooters Clients make an appointment for their consultation at the Custom Concept newly designed studio. When they visit Trish and Trevor, they will view a slideshow presentation on a big screen television of the most recent and long-time favourite images. The slideshow is a gorgeous, unique and entertaining way to get to know Trish’s style. The bride and groom won't spend the consultation flipping through albums, however if they prefer to, there are tons of albums to choose from. Couples then discuss their own wedding ideas with Trish, and the different packages and album options available to them, in order to determine what their needs are. Many of the details of scheduling and booking are taken care of by Trevor, as he keeps the studio running smoothly.
"Trish and Trevor were awesome to work with," Lyndsey Zigar told us. She hired Custom Concept for her July 6, 2008 wedding. "They are so accommodating and friendly. Trish is very helpful and willing to go above and beyond what she committed to... The whole experience was professional, relaxed and fun."
Engagement photos are included in most of Custom Concept's packages. It’s important for Trish to see how you photograph and how you interact together - who blinks, what your best side is, how comfortable you are in front of the camera, what angles you look best from... The engagement shoot also gives you a chance to see how Trish works, including what your finished product will look like.
Engagement shoots can be done at any time throughout the year, although she finds that most people like the beauty of the fall season outdoors and Trish says that everyone looks great under natural light. Most engagement shoots are casual, relaxed and outside, but if you prefer a studio shoot that’s always an option for you. Trish then creates a DVD slideshow of your engagement shots set to music that can be shown at your reception.
One month before your wedding, you’ll meet with Trish and Trevor again to review all the details. Often there are some sensitive details that need to be addressed; family dynamics, divorce... "It’s important that everyone is happy and I don’t want to be setting up a picture of the bride and groom with her parents if they refuse to be in the same picture." Trish likes to get all the info on the important people of your day; siblings, parents, grandparents and close family friends at this time.
Also, at a month before your wedding, you’ll review your wedding day timeline and location details. If you need help in choosing your photo shoot locations, Trish has a million spots that she can recommend depending your personality and style. Trish will photograph your reception site to make sure that she captures every last detail you have planned - from room decorations to table centerpieces. These are all part of your very own wedding story.
Trish also shoots every wedding with an assistant. And they don’t just carry equipment and find people who are needed for shots, they take candid photos. All of Trish’s assistants are hand-picked because of their photography skills and talent, she says, admitting that she's extremely selective. "A second shooter can capture different angles, different people, more memories."
Trish also offers her services for couples who are planning destination weddings. She has shot weddings in BC, Mexico, Toronto (with Casa Loma being a favourite location), etc. For most travel there is no additional charge. For destinations that require plane or hotel reservations or car trips over an hour, speak with Trish directly about any travel charges that may apply.
When your images are ready after your wedding (and honeymoon), Trish also creates a DVD slideshow of all of the best or chosen shots set to music. You’ll come into her studio to view the DVD (professionally packaged as if it were a real DVD with one of your images on the front). You will also get proof folio to go along with the DVD which has the image numbers on it to make ordering prints easier.
Framing for a finished product At the end, you choose your album, photos for your album, enlargements and you can even have Trish do the framing for you. "I like to make sure that people leave with a completely finished product whether it’s and album or a print."
Inotherwords... "I just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know the response re: the photographs. Everyone loves them! They are sooo impressed with what you did, so thank you again sooo much!" - Deb "We absolutely LOVE the album, Trish. Honestly, we had really high expectations for you... and you blew us away, both of us. We cannot wait to show it off to everyone. Thanks so much for everything." - Julie "I just wanted to send a quick email letting the both of you know how excited I am to send out the beautiful and well put together invitations. I couldn't have done it without you. They are gorgeous. I finally had 10 minutes last night to go through the tissue paper and I was tearing up. I had to move away, didn't want to ruin the vellum! You two have done it again - thanks for all your hard work in pulling it together - I am sure the responses about them will be great. I will be recommending your work to anyone and everyone I know. Thanks a million." - Christine Cullion "Our experience with Trish and Trevor was
incredible... Trish & Trevor make a great team. We were married eight and
a half years ago. I believe Trish was just starting her business... They
went above and beyond to make sure our needs were met... We eloped in
Niagara Falls in February, then had a reception in June... they attended
both events. I remember in The Falls... Trish needed some height for a
couple shots... and jumped up on Trevor's shoulders... we all had a good
laugh. It's obvious that Trish is passionate about her career. It shows in
her work and her personality... you can't help but notice how much she
loves doing what she does. Trevor's enthusiasm and support don't go
unnoticed either! You definitely feel at ease and natural when they are
working with you."
