Interviewing Dave & Sindy Debenedictis, Owners and Operators of Distinctive Details
From linens to lighting, Distinctive Details' decorating and linens supply company has been designed to spoil London brides with wedding details that reflect their own personal style. Simple or elegant, detailed and extravagant, the Distinctive Details inventory seems to have something for everyone.
Operating out of a large showroom on Charterhouse Road, it's easy to image just about any bride and groom finding some of their new favourite décor ideas here. Owner Dave Debendictis says Distinctive Details' modern, unique décor and linens serve the bride who wants options - many, many options - when it comes to her wedding decorations. "Don't get me wrong, we're not decorators. We simply offer couples all the decoration options they need to design their own wedding... And then we set it up and tear it down for them." said Dave. He told The Ring that working towards a perfect setting for every event has been the secret of his success. Let us explain...
Personally speaking... Wedding décor runs in Dave's family. His mother was a florist and decorator for twenty years. "I learned a great deal from my mother," said Dave, noting the countless events he watched her prepare. Between his family history and his Marketing and business background, it was only a matter of time before he found his own place in the wedding industry.
Dave says it was when he noticed a large demand for chair cover rentals that he really starting thinking about getting into weddings. When he took a more detailed look at how he could fill the demand, he quickly realized his path into the world of London area weddings. That was five years ago – and just the tip of the iceberg.
Within months, this décor company went from purchasing basic chair covers and white damask table linens to offering a much longer list of the linens, lighting, cutlery, and décor accents that set the stage for a beautiful wedding day, "...in just about every colour you could imagine having in a wedding."
Distinctive Details offers items that were hand-chosen by Dave for London weddings. Hence the company name, Dave's idea from the beginning was to add distinction to each wedding with the use of the right selection of customizable décor.
The Distinctive Details showroom is designed to give couples a taste of what's possible and is open to the public. When you visit, you'll see samples of items Distinctive Details can offer you - items like chair covers in eleven different styles and four colours, tables and table linens (cotton, polyspun, satin), chair covers, sashes, napkins, table runners, organza overlays, square table toppers, charger plates, candelabras, water glasses and wine goblets, candle posts, crystal vases, porcelain dinner plates, archways, decorative easels, pillars, fountains, head table backdrops (material and wooden) and more.
Couples can browse through a mix of designs, giving them more than a few ideas to build on. From there, Dave uses consultations and brainstorming sessions with each bride and groom to fill in the rest of the details. He says that if he doesn't have what you want, he'll do his best to find it for you.
Pricing geared to brides Dave knows, as well as his brides do, that offering competitive rates can be as important as offering beautiful décor. For this reason, he says that he keeps his rates as low as he can. "I will always be offering competitive rates if at all possible," he says, "I'm aware of the costs of outsourcing, so I make sure that I purchase and own everything I display... then I pass on those savings to the bride and groom."
Even though Distinctive Details strives to offer everything and anything for weddings, Dave says there are always a few definite favourites. "The most popular and trendy item we carry right now has got to be the tall silver candelabra centrepieces... They add height and sparkle to the look of any reception."
Dave says that table runners and overlays are also extremely popular right now. "I'm constantly scouting for the next big trend so that I can offer it at Distinctive Details," he says. He wants to ensure that every wedding he helps decorate is uniquely suited to the couple and not just a carbon copy of other weddings.
Dave carries Chivari chairs in gold, silver and white. These chairs are also popular - not just for outdoor tent weddings but indoor weddings as well. They look incredible when used in combination with long rectangular tables, table runners and charger plates.
The wow factor Dave knows that every couple envisions a perfect wedding. He's designed Distinctive Details to help you get one. He wants you to feel as if every decorating detail will be taken care of - from the archway to the place settings. Your guests will walk in to find their seats using the seating arrangement frame on an easel... The tables will shine with beautiful satin runners or overlays... Dramatic centrepieces will adorn every table, the flickering of candlelight setting the mood... Distinctive Details will make sure that every guest is stunned by the care and thought that goes into the décor of your wedding - so that the only word for it is "wow".
More than just renting décor Dave takes Distinctive Details' wedding service approach to the next level by working with some, or all, of your other wedding vendors. "From event planners to caterers, I'm happy to coordinate details with wedding professionals if it will make the planning that much easier for the bride and groom."
He treats every wedding like it was his own, which is what keeps him going - his own drive to see the perfect finished product. "It's great to see how excited the bride and groom are when they see everything finished." Dave tells us that's what makes each planning step worthwhile. Even the delivery, set up or take down is included in every package at no additional cost.
Because of so many decorating options available at Distinctive Details, prices are all over the board. To give you an idea of what to expect, prices range from $1.50 for a white chair cover to $6 for a satin table runner. Centrepieces can range from $7.50 to $35. You can rent wine goblets by the dozen or charger plates by the person. It's entirely up to you!
A 25% down payment toward your package books Distinctive Design for your wedding. While you can place your orders at any time, availability is always the key, Dave says. "I suggest booking at least three to six months ahead of your wedding date."
